8. The Ghostbirds at the Copper Owl: Love is a Con (September 21, 2013)

Hard to imagine the first time I ever saw The Ghostbirds was not even two years ago but I knew what I heard and knew that there were big things coming for this group. Since I first saw them, the band won the Best Video award at the 2013 Vancouver Island Music Awards for this very song, ‘Love is a Con’ and got to perform at this year’s Rifflandia Music Festival. Always enjoy watching this band play and finally got a good version of them performing the song they won the VIMA award for.

7. The New Groovement at at JazzFest 2013: It’s Alright (June 23, 2013)

I honestly had no idea what to expect going into this show. I had heard of none of the bands at this show, I was just looking for something to go to on a Saturday night so I didn’t have to stay home. So when I saw this 11-piece band squeeze onto the tiny stage at Lucky Bar to close out the night with everything from trumpets, saxes, trombones, guitars and a percussion session, I wasn’t sure what to expect. What I got was this awesome funk band that was…well, what the band describes their sound as. “… blends elements of R&B, soul, and hip hop to create a funk-i-fied feast for the ears”.

5. Isobel Trigger at Ship’s Point: Dust and Bones (June 30, 2013)

I thought to myself, which band had I seen the most of this year and had big things in store for 2014. That brought me to this indie rock band, Isobel Trigger. In 2013, the band released the music video for their single, ‘Dust and Bones’, were joined by a new drummer in the Summer, performed at many local shows all over Victoria, including being part of the Canada Day weekend celebration performing at Ship’s Point. 2014 already looks bright for this group with a new EP coming out in the Spring that was funded by their Kickstarter campaign as well as music videos for three other songs, ‘Tiger Shark’, ‘Carry On’ and ‘Champion’. When I see this band on stage, you can see the passion each member of the group has for music and that this is what they are meant to do. The band already has two shows lined up in 2014 already for March at Lucky Bar and September at Felicita’s Campus Pub. Keep your eyes on Isobel Trigger in 2014.

4. Acres of Lions at the BC Legislature: Bright Lights (July 1, 2013)

Who doesn’t love indie rock that is not only catchy but you’ll find concert goers singing the lyrics to their songs by heart? I know that’s why I love this band and am so happy to see what they’ve done this year. They started off the year releasing their third studio album, ‘Home(s)’, then did a cross Canada tour promoting said album. They came home in the summer for the music festival season hitting up Rock the Shores and then going out to Toronto for the Vans Warped Tour. In my opinion, I think my highlight of the band this year was seeing them play on the Main Stage at the BC Legislature for the Canada Day weekend. Nice to see local talent and a good group of guys come this far.

3. Towers and Trees at the 2013 Rifflandia War Child Lounge: Broken Song (September 15, 2013)

An amazing and busy year for Towers and Trees. They were part of this year’s Top 20 in the Peak Performance Project, named one of the Zone 91.3’s band of the month, played festivals from Rifflandia, V.I.C. Fest (which I unfortunately missed their set) and Tall Tree, sold out multiple shows at Canoe Brewpub, and even one member of the band had time to give birth to a baby. Apologies for the quiet sound quality of this video. I loved how the picture quality came out but this was the first weekend testing out a brand new DSLR camera with an external audio mic and I was basically doing trial and error here.

2. Northcote at Lucky Bar: How Can You Turn Around & When You Cry (May 25, 2013)

One of my favorite shows I attended this year was Northcote’s CD release show for his new self-titled album. I could definitely feel a buzz…a sense of electricity in the venue for this show and it lived up to all the expectations. Northcote’s album this year was one of my favorites that was released and out of all the local artists I’ve filmed, this video from this particular show has had the most views.
