DarrenHoVideos’ Top 10 Local Artist Moments of 2013

The following is DarrenHoVideos‘ Top 10 Local Artists of 2013. The views expressed in this list are of the opinion of DarrenHoVideos. All videos were recorded by DarrenHoVideos.

This list was comprised based on a number of possible reasons. Perhaps an artist put on one of the best shows of the year, perhaps they released an album/EP, maybe they made a significant impact in the local music scene in 2013, or they could have done enough to make them a band to watch out for in 2014. Whatever the reason, these artists made my Top 10 Local Artist Moments of 2013.

Top Local Artist Moments of 2013 – Number 10

10. Chris Ho at the Victoria Event Centre: Simple Notes & No Connection (January 18, 2013)

Contrary to what bouncers at the door ask me when they check my ID, no I am not related to Chris Ho, despite us having the same last name…at least, not that I’m aware of. Chris had a breakout year with the release of his album, ‘City of Dust’ and followed that up with winning the award for Songwriter of the Year at this year’s Vancouver Island Music Awards. It should be noted that I was still feeling under the weather while I was filming this, but it was one of those shows that I felt I could not miss.

9. The Roper Show at Upstairs Cabaret: Yukon Girl (Friday, November 8, 2013)

The Roper Show was one of those local acts that I had known for some time, but for one reason or another, had never seen them before. The Roper Show’s bluesy style of music got even more recognition this year as he was named one of The Zone 91.3’s band of the month this year. Had the pleasure of seeing him three times this year, all in completely differently settings. First it was at a intimate acoustic setting at Victoria House Concert B where he kept the audience glued to their seats for 3+ hours, then at the Bayview Roundhouse Centennial Celebration opening for Big Sugar, and finally rocking the crowd at Upstairs Cabaret for the first Zone Band of the Month showcase. That last show was the toughest for me to film of The Roper Show, because no matter where I was, there was no one standing still when The Roper Show was on stage.

8. The Ghostbirds at the Copper Owl: Love is a Con (September 21, 2013)

Hard to imagine the first time I ever saw The Ghostbirds was not even two years ago but I knew what I heard and knew that there were big things coming for this group. Since I first saw them, the band won the Best Video award at the 2013 Vancouver Island Music Awards for this very song, ‘Love is a Con’ and got to perform at this year’s Rifflandia Music Festival. Always enjoy watching this band play and finally got a good version of them performing the song they won the VIMA award for.

7. The New Groovement at at JazzFest 2013: It’s Alright (June 23, 2013)

I honestly had no idea what to expect going into this show. I had heard of none of the bands at this show, I was just looking for something to go to on a Saturday night so I didn’t have to stay home. So when I saw this 11-piece band squeeze onto the tiny stage at Lucky Bar to close out the night with everything from trumpets, saxes, trombones, guitars and a percussion session, I wasn’t sure what to expect. What I got was this awesome funk band that was…well, what the band describes their sound as. “… blends elements of R&B, soul, and hip hop to create a funk-i-fied feast for the ears”.
